Let the List Begin!
In no particular order, this blog will lay out 10 alternatives to the app store Google Play. Why would you ever want to use another store than Google Play? One main reason is that there may be apps in the alternative stores that are not available in Google Play. If you have another reason you love alternative apps stores, please share with us in the comments.
Amazon has gone through several phases in their app store. The most recent rendition is called the Amazon Underground where there is a vast amount of paid apps offered for free. This is a great resource because you will find apps that cost money in Google Play that are free and clear here.
One catch is that you must have the Amazon Underground app installed at all times. The apps will not work without it installed.
2. Humble Bundle
I love the Humble Bundle! They have bundles on a weekly basis that uses the pay what you want model. They have bundles that are Android based on occasion, and as you collect the Android games at a fraction of the cost you would find at Google Play.
It is easy to get caught up in the fun of buying bundles, and to top it off, the money you pay goes to charity.
So scope out the Humble Bundle. Start collecting some games, install the Humble Bundle app (which also allows you access to your comics, books, and music purchased in non-Android related bundles), and have fun!
In 2014, it had 51 million users and countless more have joined forces since then.
There are 199,813 stores as of this blog post and 617,421 apps.
In the world of Aptoide, users can create their own stores, and you can subscribe to the stores of others and download their wares.
In the interest of good faith, I suggest sticking with Aptoide’s primary store that comes baked into the Aptoide app. These applications are for sure legal and vetted. The lines can get a bit blurred if you subscribe to some of the other stores. It really just depends.
You go there just like in Google Play except in your web browser and click on an app and it will download as an apk file.
You then select the apk file and install it.
Tada! Sometimes Getjar gets exclusives, which means its always good to keep an eye out for something fun.
5. 1Mobile Market
It runs through an app that you download and functions much the same as Google Play.
It has a familiar feel and is consequently easy to use.
A Word of Caution
I need to make sure that I officially caution you that there is likely more malware lurking in stores outside of the vetted and policed Google Play system. So, just be careful and aware that there is some increased risk with a few of these five stores.
I would not worry about this in the case of Amazon or the Humble Bundle, however.
In any case, it is really fun to experiment with alternative stores, and I would argue that it is worth the risk. Just take some precautions:
- Download AVG antivirus (free)
- Don’t download spammy looking apps
- If it looks to good to be true, it probably is
And so on.
Which one is your favorite?
So, try them all and let us all know which was your favorite and why. Do not forget to come back and tell us. I really want to know! Believe it or not, there are more app stores waiting to be discovered above and beyond my top five. Maybe I’ll get around to rounding them up too one of these days.
Live long and prosper!
